CMMC Compliance Software

Six ways contractors track the 110 requirements — what each one is actually for, and where each one stops.

The tools, by category

1. Compliance automation platforms

Secureframe, Hyperproof, CuickTrac. These connect to your cloud and identity providers, pull configuration evidence automatically, and maintain the SSP and POA&M. Their real value is not the checklist — you can get that free — it is the evidence freshness: a control that was true in March and is still true in September, without anyone taking screenshots.

Where they stop: they tell you what your configuration says, not whether your process is real. An assessor still interviews your people and asks for the policy behind the setting. They also assume you know what to connect — a badly scoped tenant produces confident, wrong answers.

Pricing model: annual subscription, usually scaled by employees or by the number of frameworks. Most are quote-based rather than published. Expect a sales call.

2. CMMC-specific readiness tools

CuickTrac and similar CMMC-first platforms are built around the 110 requirements rather than around SOC 2 with CMMC bolted on. If CMMC is the only framework you will ever need, these tend to be simpler and cheaper than a general-purpose GRC platform.

Where they stop: narrower framework coverage. If a customer later asks for SOC 2 or ISO 27001, you may be buying a second tool.

3. Encrypted email and file transfer

PreVeil and similar products solve a specific, high-point problem: CUI moving over email. If your only realistic exposure is a handful of people emailing drawings and specifications, this is often a better first purchase than a compliance dashboard, because it removes the CUI from the systems that would otherwise be in scope.

Where they stop: it is one control area, not a programme. It does nothing for your SSP, POA&M or the other 100-odd requirements.

4. Documentation kits

ComplianceForge and similar sell policy templates, SSP scaffolds and control matrices. For a contractor with an IT person and no compliance writer, a good template set saves weeks.

Where they stop: a template is not an SSP. It has to be edited to describe your boundary, your systems and your evidence. Assessors spot unedited templates quickly.

5. Consultant-managed compliance

Many CMMC consultancies bundle a platform with the work. You are buying their process, not the software. This is the right call when nobody in-house can own the programme.

Where it stops: when the engagement ends. Ask what you keep — the SSP, the evidence, the platform access — before you sign.

6. A spreadsheet and a calculator

Genuinely sufficient for a first pass: score all 110, list the gaps, cost the remediation, decide whether to hire help. It is not sufficient to maintain compliance, because nothing stays current on its own.

Where it stops: the moment you need evidence that was collected continuously rather than reconstructed from memory.

Questions to ask before you buy anything

  1. Does it read my actual environment, or do I type the answers in? If you type them in, you are paying for a form.
  2. What happens when the assessment ends? Do you keep the SSP, the evidence exports and the POA&M history?
  3. Does it cover the frameworks my customers will ask for next year? Buying twice is the most common waste in this category.
  4. Who writes the narrative? Software can assemble evidence; somebody still has to describe your boundary in your own words.
  5. What is the renewal price? First-year pricing in this category is frequently discounted.

Before you buy a platform, get the number

If you are 5 points short, you may not need software at all. If you are 60 short, you need a programme. The calculator tells you which.
